Department Overview 

The Department of Civil Engineering was started in the year 2009 and offers B.Tech. programme in Civil Engineering and M.Tech programme in Structural Engineering and Highway Engineering. The department has excellent infrastructure with smart class rooms, creates digital online teaching and learning platform using Microsoft Teams, optimizing lectures through NPTEL online courses, well established laboratories, department library, seminar halls and lecture halls.

The department houses the faculty members from well reputed institutions all over the nation, from the specialization structural engineering, transportation engineering, highway engineering, environmental engineering, construction engineering and management. The department puts all efforts to create incomparable civil engineers using advanced teaching practices and learning aids for undergraduate students and state of the art research facilities for post graduate students.

The students are given industrial training in leading industries and encouraged to participate in co-curricular and extracurricular activities to develop their overall personality. The department is frequently organizing seminars, conferences, guest lectures, workshops, symposiums, technical competitions, training programmes, industrial visits for the better enhancement of the students.

Since inception, the department has been producing civil engineering graduates with outstanding skills and has been achieving good placement records in reputed organizations in India.

  • Program Objectives 

  • To prepare graduates in Civil Engineering for successful careers dealing with analysis, design and management of infrastructural projects both in National and International level. It must also help them to develop an intelligent understanding of the theoretical bases of various codal provisions in design, construction and maintenance.
  • To provide the students with a comprehensive and balanced understanding of the several branches of Civil Engineering such as Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Engineering breadth to create novel products and solutions for the real life problems.
  • To encourage those students who are motivated to go for Postgraduate programmes in the branch of their interest. Those wishing to enter services through competitive examination should also be encouraged.
  • Programme Outcomes

    Engineering Graduates will be able to:
  • 1. Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  • 2. Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
  • 3. Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
  • 4. Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
  • 5. Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modelling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
  • 6. The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
  • 7. Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.
  • 8. Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice.
  • 9. Individual and team work: Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams, and in multidisciplinary settings.
  • 10. Communication: Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as, being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions.
  • 11. Project management and finance: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the engineering and management principles and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team, to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments.

  • Head of the Department

    Dr. GUMAGERI NAGARAJ

    Dr. GUMAGERI NAGARAJ working as a Head of the department from 2018 March in this institution. He did his Ph.D. at National Institute of Technology, Surathkal, Karnataka, in the year 2016, in the field of Coastal Engineering which is one of the stream associated to Civil Engineering. He has more than 12 years of experience in teaching and research. The subject that taught by him so far are as follows, Engineering Mechanics, Advanced Concrete Technology, Geotechnical Engineering I, Transportation Engineering I, Transportation Engineering II, Urban Transport Planning, Highway Geometric Design, Management & Entrepreneurship, Pavement Materials and Construction, Building Materials and Construction and Traffic Engineering. Number of papers published by him were more than 20 in journals and conference held in all over the nation. Number of short term courses attended by me was 10.

    Awards/ Fellowship/ Recognized by him were as follows,
  • 1. Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD) Fellowship during M.Tech. for GATE seat at NITK Surathkal.
  • 2. Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD) Fellowship during Ph.D. at NITK Surathkal.
  • 3. Two Research technical papers awarded as Best Papers in the International Conference on Earth Sciences and Engineering (ICEE-2010)Hyderabad, India.
  • 4. Recognized as Technical Committee member (Reviewer) for Technical Papers in International conference at National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal on 15-18March 2015.

    Infrastructure & Laboratories

    SURVEY LAB

    In this lab we are able to calculate the area, traversing , leveling, setting out of curves, horizontal and vertical angles by using total station majorly and various other equipments minor.

    STRENGTH OF MATERIALS LAB

    In this lab we are able to conduct the tests to calculate the strength of the materials used in construction.

    ENGINEERING GEOLOGY LAB

    In this lab we are able to know the properties of rocks and mineral particles in the construction field area.

    CADD LAB I

    In this lab we are able to practice the plan and elevation of a structure using AutoCAD software.

    HYDRAULICS AND HYDRAULIC MACHINERY LAB

    In this lab we are able to know the hydraulic flow properties and efficiency of the turbines and pump.

    GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING LAB

    In this lab we are able to know the soil properties and its stability of various soil samples available in the construction field.

    CONCRETE AND HIGHWAY ENGINEERING LAB

    In this lab we are able to know the fresh properties and hardened properties of concrete and basic properties of bituminous materials and aggregate which is used to construct a road and in a structure.

    CADD LAB II

    In this lab we are able to practice to design a structure using Staad pro software.

    ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING LAB

    In this lab we are able to know the test conduct on water and waste water basic properties used in the construction field and water used in concrete.

    TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING LAB

    In this lab we are able to know the basic traffic properties from a peak hour highway route.
